QUEST FOR RELEVANCE
The life we have is a license that gives hope to achieve; knowing this as a statement of fact for me is and should be acknowledged by all men consequent on the fact that life is a bedrock of opportunities upon which all other activities are carried out. Sufficient to say therefore will be that without life, there’s no relevance. There are certain key things that are relatively common to all humans irrespective of the age we find ourselves which is advertently apposite to becoming known for something in our world today. It will be worthy to note that all humans are in the same class of life; meaning whether rich or poor, as far as life is concerned, a factor binds us in the same class which is the fact that we are all ‘humans’. Although we might be differentiated from the class of possession, then we are first humans before anything we can call possession. No matter how we choose to look at it, a poor man is human too the only thing that will be the difference in addressing him is that he is a ‘poor’ human being, the additional adjective though but then it doesn’t change the fact that he’s human. The same goes for the rich man too. He will only be addressed as a ‘rich’ human being. For example, the rich man can’t literarily fly to the sky and the same goes too for the poor man. All humans are in one class of life.
Again in the quest for relevance in life, all men desire to be relevant in the scheme of things running in the world in their various spheres of influence. A critical look at this subject of relevance is to borrow a clue from Abrahams Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs, which in order of hierarchy are;
1. Psychological needs: food, water, warmth, and rest.
2. Safety needs: security, safety
3. Belongingness and love needs: friends and intimate relationships
4. Esteem needs: the feeling of accomplishment and prestige
5. Self-actualization: achieving one’s full potential, including
The first three on the hierarchy are for all but then unfortunately the limit for humans that averagely want to just be cool and ok with life not necessarily planning to create a paradigm shift in their world because of the lack of proximity to riches. But if we take a critical look at the former two which are the self-esteem and self-actualization needs, we’ll see that it is much more than riches, it speaks a loud volume of affluence and a craving for acceptance and from the very first word ‘SELF’ then we can decode it’s a personal journey and a man has to be intentional about if it will see the light of the day. Haven said that much, it, therefore, means that man wants much more than food, clothing, and shelter if life presents an ample opportunity to transcend the level into becoming relevant in the scheme of things. This is why we see certain wealthy persons try all possible to be in the spotlight in our society today through the media and all other strategic means. It’s a quest for relevance!
In furtherance, this, therefore, informs us that all men desire to thrive if the opportunity is presented. However, the wherewithal matters a lot. Now, seeing this, attaining relevance will be a personal effort with an intentional push to be known by our world via wherewithal. In the positive line of thought now, relevance will mean being a germane entity in the scheme of things in our world. What is the wherewithal of relevance?
Being relevant is good and as a matter of fact a noble thing, but then we have so many folks in the class of human that we all are that actually attained relevance with crook and the grave dug mine and yet are regarded as relevant. It is important I note here that in all we do to attain relevance in life, let’s be sure other humans in the same class as we are don’t cry because of your quest for relevance. In the life of today, Of course, there are so many colossal savvy icon humans out there making waves in their different spheres. But then the true question to ask will be is it true relevance in the display?
On the road to relevance, there are certain key things a man must do to attain this height. I term them Relevance Needs. They are:
FULFILMENT — The Concept of Fulfilment
For me, true relevance will be attained from fulfillment. Fulfillment in anything a man does will become a propelling force that encourages one to do more and anyone that won’t give up in that which he/she does assuredly will make headway someday which will make up for being relevant in the scheme of things. A fulfilled person in a particular field of life is someone that derives joy always from what he/she does; Fulfilment will therefore be the joy or inner satisfaction derived from what a man is best at. Again it is abstract but can be felt; so when fulfillment is attained a man knows.
The way I see commitment can be likened to a master of a business that pre-informed his manager that he will be leaving on transit and does not know his time of arrival, but certainly will be back.
The ability of the manager to keep the business running will show his commitment. In any establishment commitment is not found, they are bound to pack up any time; as a matter of fact, any committee without commitment will certainly commit a crime. Commitment will therefore mean the staying power to get focused on one thing until it yields positively.
Consistency is an attribute that means KEEP SHOWING UP. If we keep showing up, surely we are on our way, as the saying goes: What is worth doing at all, is worth doing well. One of the consistency of the value that will inculcate in us if we practice it over time is the doggedness to continue even in the face of adversity.
This, for me, is the most important of all. As simplicity is the ability to present hard matters in an understandable manner no matter how savvy or knowledgeable you might be please be simple in your approach to life and people. Simplicity is an essence that commands honor on whosoever has it and it has a whole lot of buildup in our quest for relevance.
As I conclude, there is no relevance for someone who is idle. Keep pushing straight, forward, and headlong. And see relevance welcome you at the other side of the form.
